MODERN AND STYLISH NEW RECEPTION FOR POLICE HEADQUARTERS
As part of multi-phase refurbishment works for Devon & Cornwall Police, by TCi construction WORKS, a brand-new public reception at Middlemoor now welcomes visitors to the site.
Reception Refurbishment
An impressive glazed entrance with automatic doors welcomes visitors into a bright and spacious waiting area. At its heart is a bespoke, five-metre, one-piece Corian® reception counter featuring a glass upper shelf, integrated storage, cable management and accessibility features.
The interior design incorporates soft-touch, corduroy-effect wall tiles, while a feature architectural timber ceiling above the main desk helps to control noise levels and enhance the overall visitor experience.
Three breakout seating areas provide comfortable waiting spaces, complemented by two large television screens displaying multimedia information for visitors.
The refurbishment was completed with the addition of a unisex accessible WC and upgrades to the internal security door.
project delivery - Temporary Reception Relocation
Having successfully completed previous refurbishment phases across various buildings on the site, TCi Construction Works commenced this 10-week programme using a fully police-vetted workforce.
The project began with the relocation of the reception facility to a temporary area. Working within a secure external compound and following strict Covid-19 access routes, the team undertook strip-out works and a light refurbishment, including electrical, data, ceiling and decoration upgrades, before installing the existing reception counter within the temporary space.

Following the relocation, strip-out and demolition works progressed quickly, allowing construction activities to commence the following week.
Close collaboration with the client’s third-party providers was essential throughout the project, particularly regarding data and security systems, CCTV and access controls. Key programme milestones were incorporated to ensure these critical services remained fully integrated within site operations.
Early engagement with suppliers proved vital in securing several bespoke and high-specification products. Despite supply chain challenges following the national lockdown, effective planning and management enabled the project team to avoid delays and maintain progress.
Working from the project scope, the team collaborated with Cornwall-based manufacturer Vtec to develop the feature architectural ceiling. Through close communication and the sharing of design expertise, an effective solution was successfully manufactured and installed.
Complementing the architect’s design and carefully selected furniture, bespoke glass manifestations provide both visual continuity throughout the space and an additional degree of privacy.
project Completion
As the main reception serving the entire police headquarters, maintaining programme deadlines was critical to supporting wider site operations. Through proactive communication and strong stakeholder relationships, TCi was able to address challenges swiftly, minimising disruption and achieving a successful outcome for all parties.
Additional refurbishment works were undertaken to convert the temporary reception area back into office space, completing the final phase of the project. All works were delivered on programme, and the client expressed their satisfaction with both the quality of the finish and the fact that the project was completed under budget.
